Queer Eye to Bow Out in Summer 2007
Bravo TV recently announced that its hit show Queer Eye will air its fifth and final season this summer.
The show, which put the words “tszuj” and “manscaping” into the mouths of TV-watchers nationwide, became a surprise hit shortly after its 2003 debut. The gay men who comprised “the Fab Five”—Ted Allen (Food & Wine Connoisseur), Kyan Douglas (Grooming Guru), Thom Filicia (Design Doctor), Carson Kressley (Fashion Savant), and Jai Rodriguez (Culture Vulture)—changed the lives of scores of straight New York men of all ages, professions, and living situations.
Instead of trying to make the straight men into carbon copies of each other, the Fab Five introduced the type of style that was just right for each man and his life; they referred to each intervention not as a makeover but as a “make better.”
By the time the show won an Emmy for Outstanding Reality Series in 2004, it had become Bravo’s biggest hit; its stars had become household names and were often touted as positive representations of gays in mainstream media.
The Fab Five, who authored several Queer Eye how-to books during the show’s run, are busy with plenty of projects:
- Ted Allen will host PBS’ new show Uncorked: Wine Made Simple this spring.
- Kyan Douglas will continue his work as L’Oréal Paris spokesman and product advisor.
- Thom Filicia, Pier 1 Imports spokesman, will host Style Network’s new interior design reality show Dress My Nest, which will debut this March.
- Carson Kressley recently launched Perfect, his line of men’s and women’s wear, on QVC.
- Jai Rodriguez will reportedly be a guest on NBC’s new show Grease: You’re the One That I Want, which is currently airing.
